When You've Adapted to Darkness

"I could hardly find the toilet!" a visitor recently commented after using my bathroom. "Why don't you just change the lights?"

"It's not that bad," I replied with a I-see-what-you're-saying-but-I'm-not-gonna-change-anything grin. "Plus, it saves on our electric bill!"

Recently our bathroom's 4th (out of 5) light bulb went out, which brought my attention to the fact that we had any lights out at all. But even though it was now noticeably dark in there, my plan was to adapt to it like I had for all the others...until that fifth little guy gives up the ghost, in which case...I might get used to that as well.

My husband was less tolerant than I and made a maintenance request. Later that day I walked into my bathroom and literally jumped out of fear. I felt like I went outside in the middle of the day. It was blindingly bright. One glance in the mirror alerted me of some unsightly blemishes I Iiterally never saw when my bathroom was dark. This was NOT my old bathroom.

Peter had a similar response when he came home from work. "Did they change the lights?" he asked as he was heading for the bathroom. "You'll see," I replied. A few seconds later I hear "Whoa! It's a whole new room!!!"

I say all this because my attitude towards bathroom darkness reflects what my attitude towards spiritual darkness used to be. I didn't realise the clarity I was missing, and I was okay with the dimness of...myself.

But Christ has delivered us from the domain of darkness and transferred us to the kingdom of His beloved Son, in whom we have redemption, the forgiveness of sins! Now I can more clearly perceive my faults through the mirror of God's Word (by the conviction of the Holy Spirit) and can continue pressing on towards holiness.

O dear non-Christian, put an end now to your contentment in death and darkness! Walk in the light, as HE is in the light!!!
